The Connection Center: Job Club
What is a Job Club?
Job clubs are groups of people who meet regularly to talk candidly about job searching and career advancement with the goal of supporting the success of all members.
Why join a Job Club?
Unemployment takes a toll not only on one's finances, but also on one's self esteem and personal relationships. However, looking for work and navigating career challenges can be made easier when you're not alone. Job Clubs allow you to be surrounded by a diverse group of people who offer advice and encouragement. The members of Job Club discuss various topics, offer feedback, conduct mock interviews, swap leads, tackle challenges and encourage one another's success. Therefore, becoming a member of a Job Club can offer valuable assistance and renewed optimism. Members feel shared responsibility and accountability while seeking or maintaining employment. This allows members to obtain smart, savvy solutions to the obstacles they face.
What if I already have a job?
Even if you're happily employed, you can be a great asset to Job Club through your experience, knowledge and contacts to support the goals of other members. Like any volunteer initiative, treat your participation in Job Club as a serious commitment that will make a difference in your community. It also allows everyone to be aware of better career opportunities.
What do Job Clubs talk about?
While the overall structure remains the same, a range of topics are discussed each week, including:
- Discovering your passion and effectively applying for the right opportunities
- Where to find legitimate job leads and how to contact them
- Building your resume
- Working with placement agencies and preparing for interviews
- Overcoming rejection and turning "No" into "Yes"
- Combatting hiring discriminations
- Addressing problems faced by those already employed
